Draft Prescribing Standards for Nurse Practitioners

The CRNA requests input on the proposed amendments to the Prescribing Standards for Nurse Practitioners to address the exemption issued on Nov. 29, 2023 by Health Canada, enabling NPs to prescribe anabolic steroids for therapeutic use. The proposed changes are to remove the barrier within the standards, enabling NPs to prescribe anabolic steroids, to strengthen client safety and quality of care, and align with current legislation.

Changes are highlighted in the document and include the following:

  • The addition of five new criteria (1.3, 1.7, 1.12, 4.2 and 5.3)
  • Removal of ‘Appendix A: Legislation for NP Prescribing’ from the standard to allow for agility with changes in legislation, which will be repurposed to provide additional advice to the profession.

Deadline: May 27, 2024, at 11:59 p.m.
