Virtual Care Across Provincial Borders

Nov. 25, 2021

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) and the College of Registered Nurses of Saskatchewan (CRNS) have signed an agreement for a virtual care permit program.

The pilot intends to reduce barriers and facilitate registration for virtual care services between Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Scope of Virtual Care

Virtual care indicates any point where an RN or NP is providing virtual care/advice. They must be licensed in the jurisdiction that they are providing care, regardless of practice setting.

Eligible Employers

The pilot program is currently scoped specifically to RNs and NPs employed with:

  • Alberta Health Services (AB)
  • Covenant Health (AB)
  • Indigenous Services Canada (AB/SK)
  • Saskatchewan Health Authority (SK)

Applying for Virtual Care

RNs and NPs who are interested in applying for a virtual care permit will connect with their employer for details on how to apply.

If you think you qualify, contact your employer for more information and the application process.

Making a Complaint Around Virtual Care

Submit a complaint with the appropriate regulator in the jurisdiction where the care was provided.
