The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) began its journey of moving to a single mandate regulatory organization in August 2020. Since this time, there has been a strong focus on separating association from college activities.
At its March 2022 meeting, the CRNA Council voted to implement a new competency-based selection and appointment process for filling regulated member vacancies on Council. Council subsequently voted on May 25 to amend the Bylaws and Governance Policies to bring this process into effect immediately.
Going forward, instead of running in an election, eligible registrants interested in serving on Council will now apply to become a Council member through a process similar to applying for a job. Each year, Council's skills and competencies will be assessed to determine where gaps may exist. The recruitment for new Council members will focus on filling these gaps to enhance Council's ability to govern the profession in the public interest.
Moving in this direction creates a fair and objective process for registrants to apply for a position on Council. In addition, this process will increase opportunities to enhance diversity on Council and enable nimble and flexible leadership that will be well positioned to adapt to changing health system needs.
