CRNA Council Chair Update

June 29, 2022

On September 30, 2022, Councillor Nicole Letourneau’s term as chair of Council expires.  The College would like to recognize and thank Councillor Letourneau for her service as Council chair for the past two years. Councillor Letourneau was elected as chair in 2020 and was instrumental in the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta's (CRNA) quick and agile responses to legislative, regulatory and governance changes during a global pandemic. Under her leadership, the College has:

  • Undergone significant governance reform
  • Developed and approved a forward-looking new strategic direction
  • Transitioned to a single mandate regulator
  • Facilitated the development of a new Alberta-based association for all nurses
  • Enhanced processes that serve registrants (e.g. moving to attestation for the continuing competence program)

Councillor Letourneau provided steadfast leadership during the pandemic, and her time, commitment and dedication to the role of chair has been greatly appreciated. Councillor Letourneau’s last meeting as chair will be in September 2022.

To facilitate moving forward, the CRNA Council developed and approved a competency-based process to select a new chair. The process Council used is as follows:

  • Council developed and approved a Chair Competencies and Attributes Profile and defined the Eligibility Criteria
  • Council members interested in serving as chair were asked to submit expressions of interest and present to Council on June 24
  • Councillors who submitted expressions of interest focused their presentations on how their competencies and attributes matched those outlined in the profile, and also reinforced the skills and experiences that made them well suited for the chair position
  • Considering the factors above, Councillors voted through a secret ballot on June 24 to select a new chair for Council

The College is pleased to announce that Councillor Justin Burkett was selected by Council to serve as its chair, effective Oct. 1, 2022, to Sept. 30, 2024. Councillor Burkett was elected to Council in 2019, and currently serves on the CRNA’s Leadership Review and Governance Committee and is the chair of CRNA’s Nominating Committee. Councillor Burkett is looking forward to serving as chair and continuing to facilitate the College’s ability to protect the public and provide service excellence to registrants.
