What Quality Assurance Means for Patient Safety

May 20, 2025

Every Albertan deserves safe, competent and ethical nursing care. The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) conducts routine Quality Assurance (QA) reviews — to ensure the province’s nurses continue to meet the standards expected of them. Our mandate is protecting the public by making sure our registrants maintain the competence required to provide quality care.

This year, the CRNA is conducting a QA review to confirm participation in the Continuing Competence Program (CCP) by registrants. Continuing competence is an important part of each nurse’s ongoing professional development. The review checks that nurses are staying current in their knowledge and skills, as the have attested to when they renewed their practice permits.

A small, random sample of registrants will participate in this year’s review, and those selected will receive clear instructions and support throughout the process. This work reinforces trust in Alberta’s health care system by ensuring registrants meet their obligations and deliver safe, effective care to the public.
