Renewal Readiness: What is CNPS and PLP?

Professional Liability Protection (PLP) generally refers to the provision of legal representation to a professional who faces allegations of professional negligence in a claim or lawsuit, along with the payment on behalf of the professional, of the compensation (financial) that the court may order to be paid following a trial or as a result of a settlement.

Professional liability protection is required in order to:

1. Ensure that individuals who have been harmed due to professional negligence are properly compensated
2. Provide adequate protection to all eligible nurses from the costs of defending an allegation made against them and any resulting damages awarded

Core Services are support services provided by CNPS, including legal advice, risk management education, and assistance with legal proceedings and certain types of regulatory matters.

The Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS) is a not-for-profit organization that provides professional liability protection and related support services for eligible nurses across Canada. 

Registrants must maintain professional liability protection throughout the period they hold an active practice permit. For annual permit renewal, you must register for or renew CNPS PLP and Core Services  when renewing your CRNA permit. You will be prompted to do so when completing your renewal application in College Connect.

The renewal period for the 2026–2027 practice year runs from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30.

Professional liability protection is a requirement for registration and permit renewal. Registrants who do not hold the required professional liability protection for their registration category are not eligible to practise.
