The CRNA’s quarterly Council meeting took place on June 12. The recording and highlights are now available.

The CRNA regularly asks for input from the public as it develops and revises standards and practice advice to ensure they are evidence-informed and align with best practice.

This input opportunity includes three draft standards of practice and two practice advice documents that provide direction, add clarity and guide registrants in continuing to provide safe, competent and ethical care.

• Draft: Female Genital Mutilation: Standards for Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners
• Draft: Duty to Self-report to the CRNA
• Draft: Coordination of Care: Practice Advice for Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners
• Draft: Collaborative Care: Practice Advice for Registered Nurses and Nurse Practitioners

The deadline to provide feedback is July 31, 2026 at 11:59 p.m. MT.

The CRNA published a new practice advice document, Competence: Practice Advice for Nurse Practitioners, that was developed in consultation with registrants and partners in Alberta's health-care ecosystem.

This supporting document to the Scope of Practice for Nurse Practitioners provides guidance to nurse practitioners (NP), neonatal NPs, graduate nurse practitioners (GNP), and neonatal GNPs in assessing, developing and maintaining their professional competence.

Effective June 22, 2026, the Health Information Act (HIA) was proclaimed in force in response to evolving health information practices and to support team-based care, governance for shared health information, privacy and data-driven innovations.

Changes to the HIA may have an impact on how registrants manage and safeguard health information in their practice. Registrants are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the changes and review any updates to organizational policies and processes related to the management of health information.

Registrants must meet several requirements to maintain their permit with the CRNA and employers play a key role in ensuring their employees have active practice permits. Registrants are required to renew their permits on an annual basis.

Key Dates Related to Permit Renewal

• Renewal Period: Aug. 1, 2026 to Sept. 30, 2026*
• Practice Year: Oct. 1, 2026 to Sept. 30, 2027*

*Renewal runs from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30 and the practice year runs from Oct. 1 to Sept. 30 annually.

Individuals who do not complete their renewal application by the deadline will not be able to practise in the upcoming practice year, beginning Oct. 1, 2026.

Permit Checks

Employers can verify the permit statuses of their employees using the CRNA’s Nurse Verification Tool for Employers. The verification tool enables employers to verify multiple permit statuses at once. Registration is required to utilize the free verification tool.

Note: when verifying employee permit statuses, ensure you are using the CRNA’s verification tool. The CRNA does not support any third party permit verification tools or services.

Permit Fee Information

Council approved a $20.00 reduction to the permit fee for the 2026-2027 practice year. The permit fee will be $460.00 (plus GST).

While some employers may cover the cost of permit fees for employees, it is each applicant or registrant’s responsibility to ensure their initial or renewal application is complete, including payment. The CRNA issues payment receipts for all completed permit applications and renewal applications. All CRNA registrants with completed applications can download these payment receipts in their College Connect accounts.
