Renewal Readiness: Continuing Competence and Quality Assurance

The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta’s (CRNA) Continuing Competence Program (CCP) supports public safety in accordance with the Health Professions Act. The CCP requires registrants to demonstrate their commitment to maintaining and evolving their professional competence through a self-directed learning plan, required education, quality assurance (QA) reviews and competence assessments.

QA reviews are conducted routinely to confirm the accuracy of registrant attestations during registration by confirming they meet the standards of practice and that they maintain their competence.

A small, random sample of registrants is selected each year for a QA review. During this process, registrants are asked to submit their self-directed learning plans to ensure they are staying current in their knowledge and skills, in accordance with the CCP. Registrants receive clear instructions, resources and support throughout the process.

The CCP is one of the many ways the CRNA ensures registrants provide safe, competent and ethical care to Albertans.
