How Registrants Maintain Their Permits

Registrants of the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) are required to renew their permits annually to continue practising under a protected title or designation in Alberta.

Renewal is a crucial way the CRNA protects the public, by ensuring registrants continue to meet all the requirements to practise in an ethical, safe and competent manner.

To be eligible to renew their permits, registrants must fulfill several requirements, including:

• Ensuring their personal and employer information is up to date
• Attesting to meeting the currency of practice requirement
• Answering good character and fitness to practise questions
• Attesting to having completed the Continuing Competence Program requirements
• Reviewing and addressing any conditions on their permit
• Obtaining professional liability protection

Registration Requirements

If a permit is denied or expires due to non-renewal, the individual can no longer work under a protected title or designation in Alberta. The CRNA informs employers of expired permit statuses.
