Before receiving their first permit, applicants must complete an eLearning course on jurisprudence.
The course is optional for RNs and NPs but is available in My Learning Space to support their ongoing professional learning.
By completing the jurisprudence course, applicants gain greater knowledge of the regulatory framework that guides nursing practice in Alberta. It highlights laws and standards that regulate nursing practice under the Health Professions Act, and enables applicants to understand nursing roles and responsibilities for practice. Ultimately, awareness of nursing jurisprudence assists to uphold public safety, assist in the provision of safe and ethical care, and outline scope of nursing practice.
There are a total of five chapters. Each chapter can take one hour or less to complete.
Initial applicants are required to achieve a course certificate by completing each of the five chapters. Each chapter is completed with a short quiz that may be taken anytime and as many times as needed to achieve a required pass score of 70 per cent or higher. The certificate of completion is issued when all five quizzes are passed.Advance preparation is not required. All the information to successfully complete the chapter quiz is included in each chapter. You may enter and leave the course anytime, with your work saved.
