The CARNA CCP supports nurses in practising according to the standards and competencies. This section of the Learning Plan allows nurses to reflect on their own nursing practice, which is an integral part of being a professional.
The Practice Standards for Regulated Members are foundational to the promotion of safe competent and ethical nursing practice. These standards reflect the values of the profession and clarify what CARNA expects of its members.
CARNA has five Practice Standards:
Practice standards indicators articulate the expectations for each of these standards — expectations that apply to all nurses, in all practice settings, at all times.
Nurses must consider how each indicator is relevant to their own practice. Nurses reflect regularly on their practice to determine what they are doing well and where there are opportunities for growth or learning. This reflection can include analyzing a situation with a challenging client, considering how to implement a new research strategy, or applying a technique they learned at a lunch-and-learn session.
Nurses may also find it valuable to complete the Stand Up For Standards module on My Learning Space. This module was designed as a resource to help nurses understand each of the practice standards indicators in more detail, and how the indicators apply to each of the domains of nursing.
My Learning Space has an ePortfolio available to all nurses with a user profile for storing documentation related to their Learning Plan.
Collecting feedback helps nurses with identifying their learning needs. RNs and NPs must collect feedback on their practice which relates to their learning plan. This feedback should help nurses identify their learning goal(s), and so ideally should come from people who will give constructive and honest feedback. Peer feedback can help a nurse be more objective about opportunities they might have for growth in their practice, since it can reveal details that a Self-Assessment may not.
CARNA has provided a Feedback collection tool here, to assist you with collecting feedback.
