REGULATION CHANGES AUTHORIZE REGISTERED NURSE PRESCRIBING

The Lieutenant Governor in Council proclaimed amendments to the Registered Nurses Profession Regulation under the Health Professions Act that will further support nursing practice in Alberta. The changes will authorize registered nurses to prescribecommon medications and order diagnostic tests such as x-rays.

While nurse practitioners (NPs) already have broad prescribing ability forall medications appropriate to their stream of practice andcompetency, the regulation changes will establish authority for NPs toset bone fractures. Learn more.

CASE STUDY: TO RESTRAIN OR NOT TO RESTRAIN

Registered nurse Tyler was recently hired into a casual position at a long-term care facility. Tracey, a licensed practical nurse tells Tyler that one of her clients who has dementia, is very unsteady on his feet and frequently tries to get out of bed by himself. “He had a fall last week,” says Tracy. Tyler wonders if obtaining an order for a restraint would help ensure Mr.Brown’s safety while staff are busy caring for other clients. Continue reading.

PRESCRIPTION OPIOIDS NOW REQUIRE WARNING STICKER AND INFORMATION HANDOUT

Under the Food and Drug Regulations Health Canada now requires health-care practitioners authorized to sell a Class A opioid (including one that is compounded) to apply a warning sticker to the drug package and that a patient information handout accompany the drug. Learn more.

COMING SOON: MYHEALTH RECORDS

MyHealth Records is an online application that will enable adult Albertans to access some of their personal health records from any computer, tablet or smartphone.

MyHealth Records will empower patients to manage their care by providing a secure and convenient place to view their health records and record their health information to later share with their care providers.

The system will launch in early 2019.
