CHANGES TO IMMUNIZATION REGULATION

The Alberta government is introducing new requirements that will standardize practices for all immunization providers, regardless of whether a vaccine is provincially funded or privately purchased.

The regulation will improve the effectiveness and responsiveness of Alberta’s immunization program and was supported by regulatory bodies and stakeholders involved in the consultative process. This legislation outlines the responsibilities for health practitioners to report adverse events following immunization and the requirements for the storage, handling and transportation of vaccine.

Amendments to the Public Health Act and new Immunization Regulations come into force Dec. 17, 2018. The section requiring the reporting of immunizations and assessments will come into force on Jan. 1, 2021, to ensure health practitioners and other stakeholders are positioned to comply with electronic reporting requirements.
