CASE STUDY: DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS, END-OF-LIFE DECISIONS

Mr. Ralph Wells is fifty-five years old, has hypertension and advancing kidney disease. He suffered a cardiovascular accident (CVA) which resulted in him being unconscious, unable to move, incontinent and with no ability to communicate.

When Mr. Wells developed pneumonia, his children insisted that all possible measures be taken to prolong his life. However, his wife asserts that their father would not wish to lengthen his life under these circumstances and she reminds the children of previous discussions Mr. Wells had with the family. See what happens next.
