The Practice Standards for Regulated Members are foundational to the promotion of safe competent and ethical nursing practice. These standards reflect the values of the profession and clarify what CARNA expects of its members.
CARNA has five Practice Standards:
Practice Standard indicators articulate the expectations for each of these standards — expectations that apply to all nurses, in all practice settings, at all times.
Nurses must consider how each indicator is relevant to their own practice.
For example, with Practice Standard indicator 3.1: The registered nurse practices with honesty, integrity and respect.
The word "practice" might be interpreted as:
Provides clinical care with honesty, integrity and respect.
But practice applies equally to other domains of nursing, so the indicator can also be interpreted as:
Teaches with honesty, integrity and respect.
Conducts research with honesty, integrity and respect.
Provides administrative services with honesty, integrity and respect.
