CARNA began authorizing NPs and GNPs to prescribe controlled drugs and substances (CDS) in February 2014. Authorization is granted only after an NP or GNP completes the requirements outlined on this page. Until that point, a condition is placed on the practice permit restricting the individual from prescribing CDS.
New applicants will need to meet these requirements according to policies adopted by the CARNA registration committee.
If CDS prescribing was part of your Alberta NP program curriculum (completed after 2015), you have met the education requirement and can move on to completing the CDS jurisprudence module.
If you completed your CDS education in an NP program outside of Alberta, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org to determine if the program meets our requirements.
If CDS prescribing was not part of your NP program curriculum, you must complete one of the following courses and the CDS jurisprudence module:
