Nurse practitioners (NPs) are registered nurses who have undertaken graduate education and training in advanced clinical practice. NPs conduct comprehensive health assessment, diagnose health/illness conditions, treat and manage acute and chronic illness within a holistic model of care. NPs order and interpret screening and diagnostic tests, perform procedures and prescribe medications and therapeutic interventions.

We ensure that all registered nurses and nurse practitioners practising in Alberta meet qualifications and standards before allowing them to practise. Ways to meet requirements to practise may be different depending on whether you got your nurse practitioner education in Alberta, elsewhere in Canada or outside of Canada.
Alberta welcomes nurses from other parts of Canada and the world. If you completed your NP education outside of Canada (regardless of where you completed your initial RN program), here's what you need to know to apply to practise in Alberta.
