Archives Finding Aids:

Here are detailed file-by-file descriptions of the contents of specific fonds and/or links to scanned documents.

What are Finding Aids?

Finding aids are descriptive tools, (e.g. registers, guides, inventories, indexes), containing information about the records in the CARNA archives.  They make it possible to retrieve particular records or information from these archives.

Individual finding aids will be linked to this website as they become available.

N.B. Not all holdings have been inventoried.

What are fonds?

A fonds, or "fond darchives", is the whole of the records created and/or accumulated by a particular individual, family, or corporate body in the course of the creators activities.

Search Tips

Within search boxes:

  • To do a wildcard search use "*" at the end of a string of letters.
    Example:
"nurs*" will find nurses, nursing, etc.
  • To narrow a search (boolean "and") use "&" between the search terms.
Example: "war & military" will find records in which both words occur.
  • To broaden a search (boolean "or") use "/" between the search terms.
Example: "labour unions / professional organizations" will find records in which one of these terms occurs.
  • To search for one term but not another use "!" between the search terms.
Example: "health services ! health service".
  • To search on a date range use ":" between the search terms.
    Example:
"1950 : 1960" will find records with date information between and including the two years.
