Volunteer Opportunity: Invigilators for the Canadian Registered Nurse Exam

Invigilators ensure the security of exams before, during and after writing sessions of the CRNE and ensure all candidates write the exam under fair conditions.


  • minimum of 15 years nursing experience
  • a demonstrated commitment to the registered nursing profession
  • reside in Grande Prairie, Fort McMurray, Edmonton, Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge or Medicine Hat
  • capable of lifting examination boxes weighing up to 10 kg
  • able to walk easily throughout the examination area during the course of a day
  • not currently employed as a clinical instructor/educator teaching potential exam writers
  • not currently serving as a member of another CARNA regulatory committee


  • invigilate one-to-two exam writing sessions per year (sessions are held in February, June and October)
  • take on the position of presiding officer if called upon to do so
  • commit one-to-two hours preparatory time to review guidelines and prepare for administering the examination
  • attend orientation (targeted for mid-May 2013)
  • provide formal written feedback on the examination administration and identify any areas of concern and recommendations for consideration
  • maintain a quiet, comfortable environment for the writers

CARNA will reimburse invigilators and presiding officers at a per diem rate.
