Competency Profile for Registered Nurses

The CARNA document Entry-to-Practice Competencies for the Registered Nurses Profession and the International Classification of Nursing Practice (ICNP) and the Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) describe the competency profile for registered nurses in Alberta. The International Classification of Nursing Practice (ICNP) and the Nursing Intervention Classification (NIC) readily identify a very comprehensive list of RN competencies at the level of specific nursing interventions. NIC includes interventions that registered nurses provide to their clients. An intervention is any treatment, based upon clinical judgment and knowledge that a registered nurse performs to enhance client outcomes.
