The College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA) supports the development of Specialty Practice Groups (SPGs) by registered nurses (RNs) who share a common interest in:
- a defined area of nursing, or
- a social concern directly or indirectly affecting the practice of nursing, and whose interests are not already represented by a CARNA-recognized SPG.
CARNA recognizes SPGs as valuable to the promotion of the profession, to enhancing quality of care and standards of practice, and to the development of knowledge and competency through sharing among peers.
The expertise of SPGs is recognized by CARNA, and liaison with the groups provides input into decision-making on relevant issues. These groups also provide networking opportunities to RNs who work in a variety of practice settings.
In order to be recognized by CARNA as a specialty practice group, an application process must be completed. Please refer to GP- 11.1: Council Linkage with Specialty Practice Groups and the SPG Bylaw in the Links and Resources for details.
Please note that if you are interested in receiving information from, and being contacted by, an SPG, please update your profile online by logging into the member's section.
CARNA currently recognizes the following SPGs:
