Reflective Practice Requirement

The CARNA CCP is based on a reflective practice model. Reflective practice involves the review of one’s nursing practice to determine learning needs and incorporate learning to improve one’s practice. RNs and CGNs reflect on their nursing practice using the CARNA Nursing Practice Standards. NPs reflect on their nursing practice using both the CARNA Nursing Practice Standards and the CARNA Nurse Practitioner Competencies.
CARNA’s continuing competence process involves:

  • self-assessment of one’s nursing practice
  • collection of feedback about one’s nursing practice
  • prioritizing indicator(s) to focus on for professional development
  • writing a learning plan for each selected indicator
  • reporting selected indicator(s) to CARNA
  • implementing the learning plan
  • evaluating the influence the learning has had on one’s nursing practice
  • reporting implementation and evaluation to CARNA
  • providing evidence of participation in the Continuing Competence Program

For registration each year you must look forward to the upcoming practice year and identify your professional development goals. In addition you must reflect back on the practice year ending and report on the implementation of last year's learning plan and the impact these activities had on your nursing practice

Look forward to the upcoming practice year:

  • Complete a self-assessment of your practice based on CARNA Nursing Practice Standards.
  • Obtain feedback about your nursing practice.
  • Develop a learning plan for the upcoming practice year based on the self-assessment and feedback you received.
  • Identify on the application for practice permit at least one (and up to three) of the Nursing Practice Standard Indicator(s) your learning plan is focused on.

AND
Reflect back on the practice year now ending:

  • Report on the implementation of your learning plan for the practice year now ending.
  • Evaluate the impact on your practice.

The reflective practice review is an annual requirement for CARNA Continuing Competence Program. Each year at registration you indicate to CARNA that you have engaged in reflective practice by answering the Continuing Competence reflective practice questions on your application for practice permit.

Be sure to keep all your documents related to Continuing Competence and completion of reflective practice for five years so you can refer to them if you are asked for further information. Do not submit them to CARNA unless requested. Personal feedback information is for your use only and should not be submitted to CARNA.
